Dr Irani is a distinguished scholar and lecturer on the history, external relations and politics of the Middle East. He has held distinguished academic appointments in several US and Canadian universities including American University, Washington College, and the Royal Roads University in Vancouver. As well, Dr Irani has served on the faculty of the Lebanese American University in Beruit.

Born in Lebanon, he received his Bachelor’s degree from Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan, Italy and the Masters of Arts and PhD from the University of Southern California. His doctoral dissertation focused on the role of the Holy See in Rome in the Arab-Israeli conflict between 1962 and 1984, and much of Dr Irani’s academic career and extensive list of publications has examined the role of religion in shaping relationships among nations and peoples.

George came to Madrid in 2005 to become Director of the Middle East Program at the Centro Internacional para la Paz in Madrid. In this position he has worked extensively with rebuilding the civil society in Iraq and with achieving reconciliation in his native Lebanon. He currently holds a Visiting Professorship at CEU where he teaches an active course load while continuing his extensive travel, work, and research throughout the Middle East.

Dr Irani is currently working on several research papers dealing with Iran. Using source documents from his extensive travels in the Middle East and his access to public media and private contacts, he will help us understand the prospects for thawing of the relationship between the US and Iran, will speak of the recent initiatives by the new Obama foreign affairs team, and will address the effect of the mid-June elections in Iran. George hopes as well to help us understand this relationship from the viewpoint of Iranian citizens.

As usual at Yale Club gatherings, we look forward to a lively interchange between George and the guests at this Yale Club dinner. The main address will be in English, but Dr Irani will be happy to address any questions in castellano.

We have three prominent journalists from the print media and one outstanding think-tank scholar participating in the panel, two American and two British, which will provide commentary from both the US and European perspectives on the highly contested approaching elections.

Coming in the midst of a world economic crisis, these elections are of more than usual importance as to the near future of the United States and perhaps its long-term relationship with friendly nations, others not so friendly, and others who are potential enemies. There are so many matters at stake, that it would take many pages to describe them all.

We welcome everyone to come and participate, bring your friends, and enjoy hearing about the very imminent elections from varying points of view.

Members of other Alumni Clubs are also being invited and we hope to have a very large  turnout for what promises to be a most interesting and timely event, continuing a tradition we started in 2000, and continuing in 2002, 2004 and 2006. We urge you to attend.

RSVP (indicating guests, if any) by fax or via the contact us form at left no later than Monday, 20 October.

We look forward to seeing you at this gathering of the Yale community in Madrid.

We are very pleased to have two distinguished panelists who will examine the tremendous impact public health decisions are having on each family by particularly looking at implications of Alzheimer’s and other related dementia.

The Yale Club is particularly proud that one of our members, Dr Ignacio Torres Aleman, a Yale trained scientist, will present his insights from his research with other primates in seeking clues about the nature and development of dementia.>Based on his ongoing work in his laboratory, Dr Torres will describe new leads in the search for the cause of Alzheimer’s and will share how science is progressing against this pandemic.

Professor Juan Díez Nicolas is a distinguished member of the faculty of UAM and has taught and researched actively in the public policy field.>He also has insightful experience as a leader of a major polling firm. Speaking on the subject of “active aging”, Professor Diez will discuss the determinants and consequences of the graying population.

As is customary at Yale Club Colloquies, questions will be invited by the audience and the answers and views of all will add to the insights of the evening.. Many of us have family members or friends who suffer from Alzheimer´s and related dementia, so the opportunity to share these experiences will add to the quality of this event.

RSVP (indicating guests by name and Alumni Club affiliation, of any) by fax or e-mail to Bertram Schader no later thanMonday, 22 Sept.

We look forward to seeing you at this first gathering of the Yale community in Madrid this Fall.
