Junior Ben Wescoe, who won the ECAC Championships in the fall and was an All-Ivy selection in the spring, has been elected Yale's 2009-10 men's golf captain. The announcement was made last week at the team's annual post-season banquet.

Junior defender Claire Eliasberg (San Diego, Calif.) has been elected Yale's 2009-10 women's lacrosse captain after a team vote held Monday morning at Ray Tompkins House. The Bulldogs also announced their team award winners, selecting senior midfielder Jenn Warden (Edgemont, Pa.) as Most Valuable Player. Eliasberg won the Gib Holgate Award and sophomore defender Augusta Hixon (Cambridge, Mass.) was named Most Improved Player. The Yale coaching staff also instituted two new awards. The Greg Mecca Award went to freshman attacker Kerry Hamill (Marriottsville, Md.) and the Rookie of the Year went to freshman goalkeeper Whitney Quackenbush (Manhasset, N.Y.).

Sailing. No. 5 Bulldogs Win ICSA National Western Semifinal

The No. 5 Bulldog coed sailing team showed that they were ready to take on the nation's best teams in fleet racing this weekend by winning the ICSA National Western Semifinal hosted by No. 8 Harvard on Saturday and Sunday. The Bulldogs, who edged out No. 1 Boston College for the win, qualified for their third consecutive ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship with their performance. The team also competed at the BU Trophy hosted by No. 13 Boston University on Saturday and Sunday.

The season finale for Yale Saturday wound up echoing many of the themes from throughout the year, as the Bulldogs hung tough behind a solid defense and great goaltending but ultimately could not come through with a victory. No. 8 Georgetown broke open a game that was 4-1 at halftime by scoring four goals in a span of slightly more than three minutes early in the second half, finishing off the Bulldogs 12-4. Senior midfielder Jenn Warden had two goals in her final game for Yale, while sophomore midfielder/defender Kaitlyn Flatley and freshman midfielder/defender Erin Velez also scored. Freshman goalkeeper Whitney Quackenbush made 13 saves.

W. Crew. No. 10 Brown Edges No. 2 Yale By A Tenth Of A Second

There is no question that Yale and Brown is one of the best rivalries in all of collegiate women's rowing. So it wasn't surprising that Saturday's varsity eight race came down to the final stroke. The Bears, ranked 10th in the nation, edged No. 2 Yale by one-tenth of a second on the Housatonic River. Brown finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:02, while the Bulldogs came in at 6:02.1.

The Yale men's lacrosse team finished off its 2009 campaign by giving No. 14 Maryland all it could handle before 1,256 at Reese Stadium in a crucial game for the Terrapins. Maryland, which needed a win to stay in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament invitation, broke open a 5-5 game early in the fourth quarter with five straight goals to beat the Bulldogs 10-6.

Senior Janet Kim was named first team All-Ivy for the fourth straight year after being chosen as a unanimous selection for the first team by the league's coaches Friday. Junior Jessica Rhee and freshman Vicky Brook both earned second team All-Ivy selections and sophomore Lindsay Clark earned an honorable mention selection. All four were also part of the two Yale doubles teams that earned All-Ivy honors.

Three Bulldogs were honored by the Ivy League Friday with All-Ivy selections. Senior captain Jeff Dawson and his brother, junior Connor Dawson, both earned second team All-Ivy selections in singles. The doubles team of Connor Dawson and senior Michael Caldwell was named second team All-Ivy in doubles.

The No. 5 Bulldog coed sailing team will compete this Saturday and Sunday at the ICSA Western Semifinal hosted by No. 8 Harvard with the hope of qualifying for its third straight ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy National Championship. The Bulldogs will hope to finish in the top nine teams this weekend to guarantee themselves a place at the ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship to be hosted by No. 13 Stanford in San Francisco. The team will also compete at the 61st BU Trophy hosted by No. 13 Boston University.

Bulldogs Thank Alumni for Contributions to Yale Athletics

The Yale Athletics Department hosted the first-ever Thank-a-thon on Monday and Thursday evenings to get in touch with the alumni and other donors to the University that allow the Bulldogs to field 35 varsity sports, one of the largest collegiate athletic programs in the nation. Members of Bulldog squads called donors to thank them for their contributions that are integral to the operation of the athletics department and each individual sports program.

The final game of the 2009 season offers Yale the chance to play spoiler as the Bulldogs pay a visit to No. 8 Georgetown Saturday (3:00 p.m., GameTracker, Pay-per-view Video on Georgetown Website). The Hoyas were the Big East regular season co-champions but fell to Notre Dame 12-10 in the Big East Tournament championship game last Sunday, missing out on an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. So Georgetown will be looking to solidify its case for an at-large NCAA bid with a win over Yale, while the Bulldogs seek their first win against a ranked team this season.

Yale and Brown have had some memorable races in recent years. Last year, the varsity eights met three times. The Bears won the first two, including a one-second victory at the Eastern Sprints. The Bulldogs, though, earned some revenge by edging Brown to capture the Grand Final at the NCAA Championships. The first of what could be three meetings again this spring is Saturday on the Housatonic River in Derby. Racing begins at 11 a.m. at the Gilder Boathouse.

Yale rallied from a 5-1 deficit to tie the game 5-5 with 11:23 to play Wednesday night at Stevenson Field, but Bears midfielder Molly McCarthy broke the tie with 7:51 left and attacker Jesse Nunn added an insurance goal in the final minute for the 7-5 final. Senior midfielder Jenn Warden scored four goals for Yale, all unassisted, and sophomore midfielder Logan Greer scored the other Yale goal on a free position shot. Freshman goalkeeper Whitney Quackenbush made 11 saves, holding Brown to a 3-for-7 performance on free position attempts.

Track Field Athletes Prepare to Host New Haven Run4Africa 5K on Saturday, May 2

This Saturday, May 2, members of the Yale Track & Field team will use their weekend off from competition to host a race of their own: the New Haven Run4Africa 5K road race. With the help of the Yale Athletics Department, the team has organized this event in order to raise support for the charity Shoe4Africa. All proceeds from the race will benefit Shoe4Africa, and a shoe drive is being held to collect new and used running shoes for Shoe4Africa's projects. The race begins and ends outside of the Yale Bowl, and will start at 11:00 a.m.
