Over the past fifty years, the rate of social and political change in Spain has been both dizzying and fascinating. In the near to medium term, more interesting changes await, as the country addresses issues including terrorism, immigration, and climate change.

This panel brings together three experienced and perceptive observers of the Spanish scene to help illuminate the path ahead.

  • Giles Tremlett has lived in and written about Spain since graduating from Oxford more than 20 years ago, and currently is the Madrid correspondent for the Guardian. His recent book, The Ghosts of Spain, has received glowing reviews on both sides of the Atlantic for its look at a contemporary Spain still struggling to come to grips with aspects of the past.
  • Ignacio Sánchez-Cuenca is a Professor of Political Science at the Juan March Institute. He has focused his research on terrorism, electoral behavior and comparative politics since receiving his doctorate from Complutense, where he currently is teaching part time. During the academic year 2004-2005, he was the Rice Visiting Associate Professor at Yale University. He has been associated with the Universidad de Salamanca, the Universidad Pompeu Fabra, and has been a Fulbright scholar at N.Y.U. in the Political Science Dept.
  • Carlta Vitzthum was for more than 15 years (through 2005) the Madrid correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. She was a co-recipient of an Overseas Press Club Award for Best Business Journalism and a finalist for a best Journalist of the Year Award from the World Leadership Forum in London. She now provides advice on media and public relations through Eurocofin.

Each of our panelists will speak briefly about issues they see awaiting Spain, and then the floor will be open for audience questions. Please join us for this event, which promises to both raise and shed light on interesting questions about the future of Spain.
